Welcome to Novel Study Source.

Here you will find complete, ready-to-use novel studies and literature response units. Each item has been created with student-centered teaching in mind, and includes a variety of comprehension, inferring, sequencing, predicting and summarizing questions and activities. Most importantly, each novel study includes many graphic organizers that are sure to engage and motivate students.

Obviously there is no novel study that can replace excellent teaching. As a teacher, remember to create excitement surrounding the novel before, during and after reading. You are the role model for your students! During reading, follow the students' lead. If they desperately want to keep reading, skip the comprehension questions and foster their love for literature!

As teachers, it is our responsibility to do all that we can to create a love for learning in our students. I hope that the items you find on Novel Study Source can help you achieve that goal.

"Stone Fox" Novel Study

Owls in the Family and Stone Fox are two novels that I teach in my grade four classroom year after year. I have never had a student not like either of them and both authors seem to have an amazing ability for engaging readers.

"Stone Fox" by John Reynolds Gardiner is the story of a boy who enters a dog sled race with the goal of winning enough money to save his grandfather's farm. This story will have students begging to keep reading. When I teach this novel I generally try to integrate many different types of reading, such as shared reading, read-aloud, partner based reading and independent reading.

The following link will direct you to a 33-page literature unit complete with comprehension questions for each chapter, higher-order thinking activities and graphic organizers to promote understanding. Enjoy!
